About the South Carolina Fife and Drum Association

The South Carolina Fife and Drum Association (SCFADA) was founded in 2026 by a distributed group of South Carolinian fife and drum enthusiasts inspired by the United States' 250th anniversary. Some members were drawn by the music, others by the history, and many by both. Still others joined because they missed the role that fife and drum had played earlier in their lives. Together, this diverse community is dedicated to reviving the American art of fife and drum in South Carolina.

The Association exists to help individuals and communities across South Carolina discover, preserve, and share this unique musical tradition. SCFADA is committed to outreach, education, and the preservation of South Carolina's colonial and martial music heritage. During its initial stages, the Association intends to operate as a low-overhead, mission-driven organization focused on supporting fife and drum activities throughout the state. Its operating objective is to achieve financial sustainability in support of its educational and historical mission, with organizational resources dedicated to advancing that mission rather than private financial enrichment.

The Association supports these goals by providing an organizational and administrative framework for emerging groups, coordinating charitable support through qualified partner organizations where appropriate, maintaining shared equipment and resources, promoting public interest in fife and drum traditions, organizing educational programs and events, encouraging historical research and musical instruction, and serving as a repository for historical and musical materials.

To further its mission, SCFADA plans to partner with a qualified 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor to facilitate charitable donations and grants. The Association is politically and religiously unaffiliated and welcomes individuals of all backgrounds who share an interest in fife and drum. Above all, SCFADA values mutual respect, historical curiosity, community, and a shared passion for this uniquely American musical tradition.

Music of a Complex Era: An Important Note

Our organization aims to bring to life the traditional music that echoed through colonial South Carolina, exploring the dedication of early American musicians and the enduring ideals, struggles, and contradictions of the American Revolution.

The fight for American independence coexisted with the brutal realities of chattel slavery and the displacement of Indigenous peoples. While we honor the pursuit of liberty that shaped our nation's founding, we recognize that these ideals were denied to many who lived during that era.

We are committed to portraying history with honesty, objectivity, and respect by recognizing the profound contributions, endurance, and sacrifices of African American and Indigenous communities to the rich heritage of South Carolina.

By understanding the full historical context in which this music was performed, we hope to foster a deeper appreciation for both the tradition itself and the diverse people whose lives shaped the history of South Carolina.
